The method is designed to sort objects according to shape and/or size and is of the type in which objects are displaced in front of a detecting device such as a camera. It is characterised in that the objects are displaced along two different courses, one being substantially horizontal and obtained by moving a support on which the objects rest, the other, vertical, one being obtained by allowing the objects to free fall as they fall off the end of the horizontal course, in that on the one hand, the contour as considered perpendicularly to the axis of fall and, on the other hand, the contour as considered parallel to the axis of fall are detected, and in that the objects are conveyed one by one towards at least two storage zones on the basis of the results of the detection. <IMAGE>
