A method whereby a transducer (4) is electrically excited to produce ultrasonic waves which pass through the medium of interest, and the echoes from the interfaces in said medium are picked up and analyzed. A thick transducer (4) is used, the face of which is directed at said medium (M) and has a curved concave surface (5) to focus the ultrasonic wave in the medium to be studied (M), and to obtain good lateral resolution, while the device (6) for electrically exciting the transducer can apply a voltage increment (7) to said transducer in order to produce a pressure pulse.
