PURPOSE:To provide the reference vectors of a pattern collating method and a correction terms learning system by carrying out distance calculation by a specific method when optimum arrangement is being contrived by executing the learning from a state where the learning is insufficient. CONSTITUTION:The category of such a reference pattern (Yi, Zi) that a distance (d) is minimum is (k) with respect to an input vector X whose category is judged as (m). At this time, if (k)=(m), formula I and the reference patterns are updated, whereas if (k)not equal to (m), such a reference pattern (Yj, Xj) that the distance (d) is minimum among reference patterns whose categories are (m) is detected, and formulas II - V and the reference patterns are updated when the distance (d) = ¦X - Yj¦<2> / Zj is smaller than a threshold value E.
