This steering assistance device for a motor vehicle or equivalent, capable of fitting onto the steering column (2) of the said vehicle, is characterised by the fact that it includes an element which is rotationally immobilized with respect to the column (2) and transversely on the latter, and supporting, on the one hand, an electric assistance motor (6) with two directions of rotation, and its power device (15) controlled by a computer (14) and, on the other hand, the two probes (16-17) of a sensor for detecting the turning moment exerted by the driver on the said steering column (2), each of the probes (16-17) being carried by a bearing (10) which forms part of the support element (9) in which the said steering column (2) can rotate. <IMAGE>
