The present invention relates to a cathode for electrically purifying or electrically recovering copper. This cathode comprises a copper-coated steel suspension bar and a flat starting plate which is made of stainless steel and which possesses a number of tabs which are formed along its upper edge and which are attached to the suspending bar. The tabs have been bent by turns in opposite directions in order to bear against and adhere to the side surfaces of the copper- coated suspension bar and have been firmly welded to the copper coating. The tabs can be welded to the upper side or side surfaces of the bar and a ribbon of stainless steel can be attached tightly to the copper coating between the tabs and the copper coating so that the tabs can be welded to the stainless steel ribbon.
