Rolled strip material (2) is fed by rollers (13) along a linear path. Edge guidance is provided by elements (3,4) that can be moved into contact with the edges of the strip. Each element has a pair of linear hydraulic actuators (8,14) that receive inputs from valves coupled into position and force regulating loops. Each loop has a position regulator (30) and a force regulator (32). Position signals are fed back from sensors for correction control. The force is limited to a set value. A process control computer (15) is coupled to the system. ADVANTAGE - Reduces wear of guides.
