An electric holding brake electrically reversibly fixes the rotor shaft (1) of an electric motor and has a braking jaw or ring pressing against the part to be stopped when the electric supply is interrupted. The brake ring (2) embraces the rotor shaft (1) with play, forming a tangential slot (21). A memory element is in the form of a positioning bow gripping over the slot, anchored with the ring on both sides of the slot, and drawing the slot closed when the electrical supply is interrupted. The brake ring is pref. of plastic. Between the ring and the shaft is pref. a braking layer. ADVANTAGE - Rapid response and operation.
