The use is claimed of alkaline earth metal salts of acylcyanamides of formula (ROCONCN)2M (I) as catalysts for the ethoxylation or propoxylation of cpds. contg. active H atoms.. R = opt. branched 5-21 (pref. 5-17C) alkyl, opt. substd. by OH, hydroxyethyl or 1-4C alkoxy; and m = Mg, Ca, Sr or Ba. Cpds. to be ethoxylated or propoxylated are pref. fatty acids, hydroxy-fatty acids, fatty acid amides, alkanols, alkylphenols,. polyglycols, fatty amines, fatty acid alkanolamides, and vicinal hydroxy, alkoxy-substd. alkanes. (I) is pref. used in an amt. of 0.1-2 wt.% based on the final prod. wt. catalysts include Ba caproylcyanamide; and Sr caproylcyanamide. USE/ADVANTAGE - A wide range of active H cpds. can be alkoxylated to give 'narrow range' prods.. The catalysts can remain in the prod. without causing hazing.
