Program-controlled. washing machine or dishwasher includes intermediate storage for the storing and reuse of the washing or rinsing liq. The liq. is subjected to sterilisation. Machine has separate housing unit associated with the appliance and acts as a recycling unit that can be put into operation when required. The unit has intermediate storage, the sterilisation unit, a water control system, and a display and operating unit. The household appliance has plug connection for the recycling unit to provide for reciprocal information transfer. The recycling unit is severably connected to the washing soln. or rinsing container of the household appliance via associated water conducting paths and has a discharge system shared by both appliances. ADVANTAGE - Separate recycling unit, which can be operated when required, is provided and includes sterilisation unit which can function independently of the household appliance.
