A tool with a tapered shank (3) is held in the tool holder (1) by radially sliding bolts (38, 38) which engage a circumferential groove (33) formed in the head of the shank (3). The tool can be released by a piston which moves the clamping ring (14) to the left, compressing the stack of disc springs (12) and allowing the bolts (38, 28) to be pushed radially outwards thus releasing the tool. The tool is prevented from being pulled out of the holder by locking balls (50) which are trapped in recessed in the locking ring (23) by the clamping ring (14) and the chamfered edge of the tool holder.
