PURPOSE:To enable production of a composite material, sufficiently dispersible in a dispersion medium and excellent in physical properties such as strength by irradiating carbon fiber balls with vacuum ultraviolet rays, etc., in the presence of an oxidizing gas and forming specific surface groups. CONSTITUTION:For example, carbon fiber balls in which carbon fiber having 0.001-30mum diameter is complicatedly entangled are irradiated with vacuum ultraviolet rays and/or mercury resonance lines in the presence of an oxidizing gas selected from the group of dried or cooled oxygen, oxygen-enriched air, carbon dioxide and ozone to form oxygen-containing surface groups on the aforementioned carbon fiber. The above-mentioned balls, as necessary, are then treated with an alkoxy compound, carboxyl group-containing compound and/or a derivative thereof to form polar groups. Thereby, the objective carbon fiber balls capable of exhibiting more improved dispersibility in a dispersion medium such as a liquid or a solid such as a resin are obtained. |
