METHOD FOR DETERMINING THE ORIGIN OF HUMAN DNA-CONTAINING SAMPLE A small amount of human DNA isolated from a DNA-containing sample, such as a body exudate, tissue sample, body part, or badly disfigured corpse, is subjected to the polymerase chain reaction procedure to amplify the (TG)n microsatellite present in the fourth intron of the human cardiac muscle actin gene locus. Since the (TG)n repeat found in this locus has at least 12 co-dominant alleles in the human population, amplification and sizing of the allelic profile of DNA from the sample yields a distinctive genetic signature that can be used to identify the source of the sample. |
