PURPOSE:To obtain a medical appliance having a coating layer showing extremely high lubricating properties under a wet condition and having excellent safety by performing the graft polymerization of a hydrophilic vinyl monomer with the surface layer of a medical appliance molded from a polymer material or having the polymer material applied to the surface thereof and inserted in a living body at the time of use. CONSTITUTION:A hydrophilic vinyl monomer or a polyfunctional vinyl monomer is added to the surface layer of a medical appliance molded from a polymer material or having the polymer material applied to the surface thereof and inserted in a living body at the time of use to be subjected to graft polymerization or exylene oxide or an alkylene oxide hydrophobic to the medical appliance is added to the surface layer of the medical appliance to be subjected to graft polymerization to coat the medical appliance. The graft polymerization reaction of the vinyl monomer or the alkylene oxide monomer is uniformly and densely started on the surface of the medical appliance and the formed graft molecular chains are strongly bonded to the surface of the base material of the medical appliance by a covalent bond and a mucous membrane like surface layer having high safety is imparted. |
