Prepn. of oxygenated monoterpenoid derivs. of formulae (II) and (III) comprises dissolving a terpene of formula (I) in organic solvent and oxidising with air or O2 in the presence of an iron, manganese or molybdenum tetraphenyl porphyrin catalyst whilst irradiating with electromagnetic long waves of 200-800nm. Pref. a nucleophile with an axial ligand of pyridine, imidazole or N-methylimidazole is added to the reaction mixt.. Benzene and toluene are the pref. solvents. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful in plant protection as insect baits and are useful in perfumes. The process does not use explosive cpds. e.g., dibenzylperoxide or CuCl.
