The liq. crystal unit comprises a liq. crystal cell (1) which has a helical crystal layer between an upper and lower electrode substrate (11,12) which is subject to an alignment process. A liq. crystal with a positive dielectric anisotropy and an optically active material is twisted around an angle of 180 to 360 deg. in the thickness direction; and two coaxial doubly refracting components (2,3) on at least one of the upper surfaces of the crystal elements, and two polarisation plates (4,5) between which the cell (1) and the doubly refractory components (2,3) lie. The angle described by the upheal axes of the coaxial components is 45 deg. or less. USE/ADVNATAGE - Enables multiplexing. Displays both black and white and alos multicolours through a combination of colour filters.
