The cover plate serves for covering drainage ditches (1) of known design at sports grounds and allows good surface drainage whilst reducing the risk of accidents for sportsmen. For this purpose, it consists of a profiled plate, for example made of aluminium, which is placed on the shoulder faces (6) and edge-side support walls (11), has centrally arranged water drainage slots (13), and is provided between the latter with fastening ribs (12) for fastening edge elements (20). The height of the support walls (11) together with the thickness of the edge elements (20) above the support walls (11) is approximately equal to the height of the ribs (5) of the drainage ditches (1). The water can thus flow off easily. If the edge elements (20) consist of a caoutchouc of Shore A hardness 75, there is no risk of injury for sportsmen.
