A so-called "mouse" is frequently used for moving a cursor (CU) on the screen (BS) or for selecting or displacing a plurality of characters or complete frames. This known operating element is awkward to handle, particularly in the industrial area. The device according to the invention exhibits a displacement unit (VE) which can be axially moved on a guide rail (FS) extending approximately parallel to one edge of the screen (BS) and can be rotated about the axis of this guide rail. The operator thus has the mental reference between movement on the screen (BS) and the movement of the displacement unit (VE).
