The four-wheel drive motor vehicle has the front wheels driven directly from the gear-box output shaft while the rear wheels are driven through a free wheel. This free-wheel is so designed that it can free-wheel in either direction of rotation. The outer ring (2) is driven from the engine while the inner ring (1) is connected to the cardan shaft which drives the rear axle. The drive is transmitted from outer ring (2) to the inner ring (1) through wedging elements (4) fitted in a cage (3). A ball (11), is pushed in eithe rof the two parts of a U-shaped groove in the end ring (6), by the initial rotation of the outer ring (2). This movement of the ball moves the cage (3) and clamping elements (4) so that the free-wheel can operate in the required direction. USE - Four-wheel drive motor vehicles.
