Granular material for compression and/or grinding is fed symmetrically from a feed-shaft (6), eg with an internal worm, into the vertical pass line (8) between a pair of counter-rotating rollers (2,4) mounted in frames. Air entrained in the granular material is taken via gaps (28,30) formed between the roller surfaces and the parallel feed-shaft walls (22,24) into angled chambers (16,18) at either side of the pass-line and extending the full width of the roller gap, as far as their closed ends. These collectors chambers have air outlets, which to remove any dust entrained in the air incorporate filters (35,38), either of recyclable cartridge type, or continuously operating mechanical filters, eg cyclones.
