[Class 23] Relates to a centrifugal separator suitable, inter alia, for separating gluten from starch particles and for washing wax crystals suspended in a mixture of naphtha and oil. Starch milk passes from a cavity 17, Fig. 1, into the spaces 2 between coned discs 3 and is concentrated. The liquid discharges through the overflow 10. The concentrate passes into channels 11 and the solids separate further and slide along the inner walls of the channels. A flushing liquid introduced through channels 6 moves over these solids in counter-current and carries the gluten particles with it to the overflow 10. The purified starch passes into a chamber 8 and is discharged continuously through openings 9. The initial introduction of the starch milk from the cavity 17 is at the level of the entrances to the separating channels 11. The discs 3 may have a number of annular ridges. The discs 3 may be arranged in groups, Fig. 3, with the end discs extended to form collecting chambers 15 followed by separating channels 16. In the form shown in Fig. 4, separating channels 31, 32 are defined by a ring 30 and lead to a longer separating channel 18. This discharges into an annular chamber 33 with peripheral outlets 9. Flushing liquid is directed on to the solids sliding on the wall of the channel 18 through passages 21, 23, 27. The passages 21 open into a groove 22 and the passages 23 have flared outlets. The fluid from these passages has a velocity sufficient only to wash the gluten particles out of the surface of the solids. The passages 27 are convergent and the fluid from them disturbs the layer of solids to permit the gluten particles to move to the surface. The channel 18 may be in two portions of opposite conicity so that the solids cross from one wall to the other at the junction. The starch milk may be introduced at the periphery of the coned discs, and narrow channels open to the discs provided in ribs 50, Fig. 11, may be provided to prevent the incoming starch milk from eddying in the collecting chamber 8. In Fig. 7 the separating channel 18 is formed with enlargements 36, 37 which cause the solids to leave the channel wall in the vicinity of the flushing liquid openings 35. The openings 35 are in the wall along which the solids slide and such a disposition may be used without the enlargements.
