<p>A method for expanding a portion of a cylindrical sidewall of cylindrically shaped metallic body (20). This method comprises the steps of retaining a first portion of the body, disposing a coil (16) of electrically conductive material inside the body, and energizing the coil to create an electromagnetic force sufficient to expand a portion of the cylindrical sidewalls of the body outwardly. During expansion, a fluid is introduced between the coil and inside surfaces of the body to maintain positive pressure as the sidewalls expand. This invention provides an apparatus for expanding a portion of the cylindrical sidewall of the body (20). The apparatus comprises a retainer (30) for holding the body, a coil (16) of electrically conductive material, a mechanism (12) for disposing the coil inside the body, energizer for the coil sufficient to expand a portion of the sidewall of the body, and a mechanism (28) for maintaining positive gauge pressure during expansion.</p> |
