A radial-flow compressor (12) has inlet guide vane assembly to regulate the volumetric flow through the compressor. The vanes (22) are mounted in an extension (10) of the compressor inlet duct. The duct extension has a front end with a dia larger than that of the rear end, with a spherical transition zone. The guide vanes rotate about radial axes which pass through the centre of curvature of the spherical surface. Each vane has a spindle which projects through a bearing mounted in the wall of the spherical zone of the duct. The spindle carried a lever which is connected by a pivoted link to the vane actuating ring.
