In reducing the fluid content of sewage sludge charged with microorganisms, with sepn. of one or more phases, the sludge undergoes polarisations by electrical or electromagnetic fields. The fields are pref. aoplied as successive gps. of impulses formed by condenser discharge. Gps. may differ in energy level, amplitude, and/or duration, with treatment divided into preliminary and final stages. During at least one impulse treatment stage, action may be promoted by mixing or treating the raw material with gas. Impulses may be applied as the sewage passes through wound helical cylinders , forming part of an electro-impulse filter with alternate coils of conductive and non-conductive material to form the discharge section. ADVANTAGE - Energy consumption during coagulation is low.
