A dielectric motor has a rotor which moves with discontinuous angular frequency or stepwise. These operating modes are obtained because the dielectric rotor is electrically asymmetrical or has a non-rotationally symmetrical shape in combination with an external electric alternating field the direction of which can be varied by means of several electrodes. The electronic actuator is shaped so that the operation characteristic of the motor can be varied continuously between that of a continuously operating motor and that of a stepped motor. These motors can be miniaturized to a few micrometres in size and have start-up times in the micro- and millisecond range. These motors can be incorporated as micromechanical components in electronic devices and thus lend themselves to a wide range of application.
