In the treatment of gas effluent from fossil fuel power station, a sulphur-bearing fuel is burned. The gases pass through a nitrogen extractor reaction unit downstream of which there is a heat exchanger from which ammonium salts are removed by water. The water effluent is passed to a column into which air is introduced. The effluent air and desorbed ammonia it contains is then mixed with the fresh ammonia produced by the nitrogen extractor. The water flowing into the column receives an addn. of alkali resulting in a deposit which can be removed by sedimentation or filtration. The process gas used is either rareified air or cleaned gas effluent. USE/ADVANTAGE - Water effluent from the power station is of a quality which may be released.
