FAULT DETECTION AND INDICATION IN AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

A vehicle automatic transmission controller shifts a transmission (20) to the desired state when that differs from the present state. Faults in controlling a motor (42) to effect shifts are detected and stored. Push buttons (100) with corresponding lamps. During normal operation one lamp is on indicating the present gear, but a plurality of lamps are lit to indicate by a code detected faults. An unput/output port (135) allows for reading of fault codes and diagnostic testing.
