Novel catalysts that include a porous alumina support having a surface coating of at least one spinel compound thereon, e.g., a compound having the formula M1Al2O4, and a catalytically active phase deposited onto such coated support, e.g., a catalytically active metallic oxide, are well adopted for the catalytic ammonia reduction of NOX values contained in gaseous flowstreams thereof, which gaseous flowstreams typically also contain SOX values.
