An optical attenuator comprises a length of bare single mode optical fibre (1a), and transducer means (6) for applying an acoustic frequency to the bare fibre thereby inducing travelling acoustic waves in the bare fibre. The acoustic frequency is such that the travelling acoustic waves couple the fundamental LP01 mode of light travelling along the bare fibre (1a) into the leaky LP11 mode. |
