Method and apparatus for manufacturing labels or the like of small thickness from a material shaped as a solid compact cylinder. The cylindrical mass is continually cut so as to unroll it into a sheet of predetermined thickness and the sheet is wound step by step on a support as it is removed from the cylinder so as to form a reel which is unwound and split into several strips of smaller width wound on intermediate spools (barrel-shaped reels) which are used for marking by means of printing, cutting or stamping. <IMAGE>
