Device for variable-length coding of digital signals distributed in N channels in parallel, each comprising a quantification circuit, a variable-length coding circuit, and a data rate regulation circuit associating with each buffer memory a feedback connection linking the said memory and the corresponding quantification circuit. This coding device comprises: (A) at the output of the N variable-length coding circuits, a circuit (40) for classifying the coded signals as a function of their length; (B) at the output of the N data rate regulation circuits, a circuit (60) for classifying the buffer memories according to their filled state; (C) between the said coding circuits and the said data rate regulation circuits, a routing circuit (70) provided for sending, in response to a control circuit (80), each of the coded signals corresponding to longer and longer coded signal lengths respectively to each of the memory inputs corresponding to buffer memories which are less and less full. <IMAGE>
