PURPOSE:To reduce speed change shock by performing speed change on the basis of the characteristic speed change pattern set for the present speed change stage until detecting the complete termination of speed change into the other speed change stage. eon the CONSTITUTION:The control device of an automatic transmission operates a hydraulic control device to engage plural friction engaging elements selectively in order to attain a desired speed change stage. Hereupon, a present speed change stage defining means performs speed change on the basis of the characteristic speed change pattern set for the present speed change stage on the assumption that the present speed change stage is continued until detecting the complete termination of speed change from the present speed change stage into the other speed change stage. Especially difficult speed change is thus deleted with priority, speed change from the concerned speed change stage to the specified speed change stage is made difficult intentionally or easy on the contrary, and the like, thus conforming speed change to running conditions. As a result, speed change with little shock can be performed easily. |
