In the case of a melt-down unit having an arc furnace and a shaft-type charging-material preheater arranged laterally on the arc furnace, the outer walls of the charging-material preheater are formed, in its lower region, by the vessel wall of the arc furnace and in the region thereabove by the walls of a shaft forming a constructional unit with the vessel cover of the arc furnace.
