The product identification system has a module (12) that serves as both a data carrier attached to a product moving on a conveyor and as a read/write unit (13) located at a fixed station. The units have an optical receiver (15) and transmitter (17), with the receiver coupled to an amplifier (19), demodulator (20) and microprocessor (21). The transmitter receives signals from the processor via a modulator (24) and amplifier. Signals are transmitted over the optical links (SL,AS), with the read/write module being coupled to a computer (14) for data handling purposes.
