Compsns. for extn. of cholesterol are prepd. by (a) dissolving phosphatidylcholine (PC) in an inert organic solvent, (b) evaporating the soln. in vacuo, (c) adding sufficient detergent soln. to give a PC concn. of 10-35 mg/ml, (d) sonicating the mixt., and (e) adding 0.005-0.15 pts. wt. palmitoyllysine (PL) per pt. wt. of PC. The detergent soln. is 0.5-0.9% NaCl soln. contg. 0.05-0.15 pts. wt. glycyrrhizin (GR) per pt. wt. of PC. USE/ADVANTAGE - The compsns. are highly effective in extracting cholesterol from cell membranes and blood vessel walls and may be used in medicine for treating atherosclerosis and in biochemical research for modifying the lipid compsn. of cells.
