Specifically, a process for working on metals which involves generating an intense point-source of light close to or above a workpiece 2, such as an electric-arc welding process. The system 1 includes a set 92 of lenses for projecting an image of the source and of the area of the workpiece 2 which is being worked on the image- receiving circuit 94 of a television camera 5a, 5b, 57, with filter assembly 96 with at least one filter element 98, 99, 100, with a central region 120, 124 of low light transmission, in order to attenuate the image of the source projected on the image-receiving circuit 94, and a peripheral region 122 of high light transmission in order to transmit freely the image of the base surrounding the source, and a mechanism 88 for adjusting the apparent size of the central region 120, 124 with respect to the image. <IMAGE>
