NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formulaI(X is halogen; Y is H or hydroxy- protecting group; R is H or lower lakyl). USE:A synthetic intermeidate for the compound of formula II useful as a contraceptive. PEOCESS:The compound of formulaIis prepared by reacting the 1-halogeno-2-substituted-oxy-5-hydroxy-6-methylene-heptane of formula III (Z is hydeoxy-protecting group) with the orthoacetic acid ester of formula IV (R' is lower lakyl) in the presence of a weak acid at 120-150 deg.C for 20min-several hours, and if necessary, hydrolyzing the reaction product.
