PURPOSE:To provide a sintered compact having excellent light-transmitting properties and a sufficient strength and hardness as a decorative member by using aluminum oxynitride as chief component thereof and adding specific amounts of Ce and Y thereto. CONSTITUTION:The aforementioned sintered compact, containing aluminum oxynitride as a chief component and further Ce and Y in respective amounts of 0.01-3wt.% expressed in terms of oxides, colored to yellow and having >=5% average light transmittance within the visible region for a planished sample of 3mm thickness. The above-mentioned sintered compact is produced by adding and mixing Ce and Y in the respective forms of oxides or alkoxides in the aforementioned amounts as a yellow colorant with aluminum oxynitride powder having >=99% purity and >=5m<2>/g specific surface area (BET value), press forming the resultant mixture under >=1.0 ton/cm<2> pressure and then sintering the formed compact at 1800-2100 deg.C in nitrogen atmosphere. |
