Zirconia ceramic for use as solid electrolyte

Zirconia ceramic for use as solid electrolyte comprises 8-85 (15-50) vol% Al2O3 wrt the sum of all the other components, the Al2O3 before sintering having a specific surface >1m2/g. The compsn.also contains 5-30 mol % Y2O3, Y2O3 concentrats, Yb2O3 or Yb2O3 concentrate, or 10-30 mol% CaO and/or MgO. The ceramic is prepared by mixing the Z,O2 stabilising oxide and alumina together, milling and granulating, then pressing, the powder and sintering the compacts. The grain size of the zirconia body is very small and hence has improved mechanical strength compared with the coarse grained stabilised ZrO2 bodies of prior art.
