The data carried used for the identifaction of parcels consists of a plate of ferromagnetic material (1) having a pattern of holes (2). The arrangement of holes represents the binary code of the carrier. The read head (7) is positioned over the data carrier and has a matrix of transmitter (6) and receiver coils (5a). The top surface of the sensor is a material of low permeability, such as plastic. The base of the unit is of a soft magnetic material (7). Low freq-uency signals (less than 2000 Hz) are supplied to the transmitter coils. ADVANTAGE - Robust and economical detection system.
