A magnetic recording medium comprising a support and, provided thereon, a magnetic layer comprising a magnetic powder and a binder, wherein the surface of the magnetic layer has a Ns:Ns(t) ratio of from 0.10:1 to 0.35:1 wherein Ns is the number of spikes protruding by not less than 0.01 mu m from an average line of a surface roughness cross section curve of the medium and Ns(t) is the total number of spikes protruding from the average line.
