A metallic electrode (1) in contact with cooling water (2) is sepd. by insulating spacers (3) from a quartz or sapphire dielectric plate (4) backed by a fine wire mesh (6) or transparent metallic film. The discharge space (5) typically 0.1 to 30 mm wide is connected by a tube (9) to a reservoir (8) contg. a Hg pool (11) which is vaporised by a heater winding (10), to vary the Hg partial pressure in the Xe-Hg mixt. as required. ADVANTAGE - Highly efficient lamp can be mfd. economically to give very large surface beams with precisely limited variation of wavelength.
