The exhauster unit has two or more rolling-piston stages in series, each, seen in the flow direction, being of smaller capacity than the preceding one. Each following stage (2,6) has a drive mechanism (4) incorporating a freewheel. Any such stage can be without a bypass valve, and with a threestage system the intermediate and high-pressure stages can be driven via freewheels.
