A catalyst for halogen exchange in halohydrocarbons or for acid/base reactions comprising a halogenated gamma-alumina having a hydrocarbonaceous or halohydrocarbonaceous material laid down thereon. The catalyst is prepared by halogenating gamma-alumina with SF4, SOF2, COF2 COCl2 or CCl4 and conditioning the halogenated alumina with a gaseous olefin or a halohydrocarbon to lay down a hydrocarbonaceous or a halohydrocarbonaceous material on its surface. The catalyst is useful for producing fluorohydrocarbons or chlorofluorohydrocarbons by reacting HF with halohydrocarbons under mild conditions.
