A reference area 14 usable with a rectangular form 10 when the form is used with a computer controlled printer. The reference area 14 having a pattern 16,18 and a reference point 20. The pattern 16,18 allowing the location of a mark printed by the printer on the pattern to be readily identified on an equivalent reference area 24 displayed on a display monitor 23 for the computer. The reference point 20 is positioned so it will receive a reference mark when printed on the reference area 14 by the printer provided the form 10 is not misaligned in the printer. A reference mark received at the reference area 14 provides information relative to the reference point 20 that is a measure of the amount of vertical and horizontal misalignment of the form 10 in the printer. This information, when placed in the computer, makes it possible for the computer to correct for any misalignment before any printing is done on the form 10. <IMAGE>
