The invention relates to a process for the hydroxylation of aromatic hydrocarbons by hydrogen peroxide, which process consists in reacting the substrate in question with hydrogen peroxide, in the presence of synthetic zeolite containing heteroatoms both as substituents of the crystal lattice and as exchanged constituents. The said process makes it possible to obtain a mixture of hydroxylated derivatives (for example pyrocatechol and hydroquinone) in adjusted proportions, when the reaction is carried out for a high charge ratio of the reactants and in the presence of a zeolite in which the proportion of titanium, calculated as TiO2, is strictly within the range from 0.1% to 7% by weight (preferably, in the range from 2% to 4%). The hydroxylation reaction is additionally carried out at a temperature in the range from 60 DEG to 150 DEG C, in the presence only of the hydrocarbon substrate or in the presence of an additional solvent which makes it possible for the aromatic hydrocarbon to be mixed, at least partially, with the hydrogen peroxide.
