The releasable car roof rack is formed from a number of parallel beams (51) which are mounted transversely above the car roof (1). Each end of a beam fits into a socket (53) formed integrally with a mounting plate (40), attached to a clamping plate (35) which is clamped to the gutter (26) by a clamping lever (32) and screw (34). The mounting plate is attached to the clamping plate (35) by a rivet (42) and by boilts (44), which pass through curved slots in the mounting plate. The latter is thus able to pivot through a limited angle w.r.t. the clamping plate. ADVANTAGE - Improved fitting and hold, irrespective of car roof curvature and size.
