Explosive compsn. (I) is in the form of a water-in-oil emulsion with a continuous phase (A) consisting of carbon-contg. combustible component (II) and emulsifier (III), and a dispersed phase (B) consisting of an aq. soln. of inorganic oxidising salt(s) (IV), the novelty is that (I) contains an expanded perlite with density below 0.60 g/cm3 (V) for prodn. of voids. (II) is diesel oil, paraffinic, olefinic, naphthenic or aromatic hydrocarbon, gas oil, heavy oil, lube oil, or liq. paraffin; (III) is sorbitan fatty acid ester, fatty acid mono or di-glycerides, polyglycol ether, oxazoline deriv. imidazoline deriv. alkali or alkaline earth metal salts of fatty acids, salts of hydrocarbyl-substd. carboxylic acids or anhydrides thereof, or deriv. of polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride; (IV) is ammonium nitrate and/or an alkali and/or alkaline earth nitrate, chlorate or perchlorate, soln. of (IV) contains 5-25% water; (I) also contains other void-forming agent(s); i.e. occulded gas bubbles, chemical gas-forming additives, expanded perlite with density above 0.7g/cm3, hollow microspheres of PF resin, UF resin or glass, or polystyrene foam pellets.
