Described is a device for monitoring a moving yarn for irregularities. A first sensor head (2) with a recess (6) and a second sensor head (3) with a recess (7) are located in such a way that the cross-sectional depth of the recess (7) in the second sensor head (3) is greater than that in the first sensor head (2). This makes it possible to detect for example slubs and projecting fibres independently. The monitoring device can be automated and used for quality control of any kind of yarn.
