Self-ignition fuel injection reciprocating piston engine - with uncooled combustion chamber and pistons of silica glass

In a reciprocating piston engine with an uncooled combustion chamber and self-ignition, the novelty is that (a) the combustion air, flowing into the uncooled combustion chaber, is brought to the self-ignition temp. by the wall temp. and corresp. compression and the fuel is introduced by injection the compression ratio being lower than that of diesel engines; (b) the cylinder and pistons are made of silica glass in a Si02 modification of natural or synthetic prodn; and (c) the silica glass, for the cylinder and pistons, has addns. e.g. of Ti02 providing a thermal expansion such that under all operating conditions, a minimal gap exists between the cylinder and the pistons to result in a contact-free dynamic gas seal. ADVANTAGE - The engine has lwoer compression requirement than diesel engines and avoids energy losses by combustion chamber cooling which can amount to up to 30% of the introduced fuel energy. The silica glass construction provides high pressure and heat resistance and thermal cycling resistance.
