An open system for photosynthesis is formed of a suspension of finely dispersed microcrystalline graphite particles in water and/or organic solvent, which is irradiated with sunlight to form electron-hole pairs for further utilisation in sec. reactions in the surrounding liq. ADVANTAGE - The system allows exergetic utilisation of solar energy and its storage in the form of hydrogen-oxygen cpds. with high free formation entharpy per unit formula or unit mass. When an aq. suspension is used, gaseous hydrogen and oxygen are formed and, when a non-aq. suspension is used, localised electron release is achieved for use in chemical reactions.
